1. Jawala Ji Temple (Main Site)

The sacred Jawala Ji Temple in Kangra district is one of the 51 Shakti Peethas where Goddess Sati's tongue fell. The temple's unique feature is the eternal blue flames burning naturally from rock fissures, worshipped as manifestations of Devi. The main complex has a marble mandap with the sacred flames, a silver serpent ceiling, and a giant brass bell gifted by King Akbar. The temple sees maximum devotees during Navratri when special pujas are performed.

2. Chintpurni Temple (45 km)

Another significant Shakti Peeth where Sati's feet are believed to have fallen. The Chintpurni Temple features a stone idol of Chinnamastika Devi. The surrounding hills offer peaceful walks, and the temple complex includes a sacred banyan tree where devotees tie threads for wish fulfillment. Best visited early morning to avoid crowds.

3. Kangra Fort (30 km)

One of India's largest and oldest forts dating back to the Trigarta Kingdom (Mahabharata era). The Kangra Fort showcases impressive gates (Andheri, Darshani), temples (Laxmi Narayan, Ambika Devi), and the Jahangiri Darwaza built by Akbar. Don't miss the museum displaying ancient sculptures and the panoramic view of Banganga and Manjhi rivers merging below.

4. Masroor Rock Cut Temples (40 km)

Often called "Himalayan Ellora," these 8th-century monolithic temples feature 15 shrines carved from a single rock. The main temple has intricate carvings of Ramayana scenes and a sacred pool. The site offers stunning sunrise views when the golden light hits the sandstone carvings. Archaeological Survey of India maintains the complex.

5. Dharamshala & McLeodGanj (60 km)

The twin hill stations offer Tibetan culture at Tsuglagkhang Complex (Dalai Lama's temple), Bhagsunath Temple with its waterfall, and St. John's Church (neo-Gothic architecture). Visit the Tibetan Museum to understand the exile history and enjoy momos at McLeodGanj's cafes. The Cricket Stadium (world's highest) offers scenic views.

6. Palampur Tea Gardens (50 km)

Known as the "Tea Capital of North India," Palampur has sprawling tea estates like Wah Tea Estate where you can witness tea processing. The Neugal Khad (stream) offers picnic spots, while Bundlamata Temple provides valley views. Don't miss the Andretta Artist Village with its pottery workshops and Sobha Singh Art Gallery.

7. Baijnath Temple (70 km)

This 13th-century Shiva temple on the banks of Binwa River is a masterpiece of Nagara architecture. The temple complex has intricate stone carvings depicting Hindu deities. The sacred shrine is mentioned in Shiv Purana as where Ravana worshipped Shiva. The annual Shivratri fair attracts thousands.

8. Bir-Billing (90 km)

World famous for paragliding (hosts World Cup events), Bir is also a Tibetan colony with monasteries like Palpung Sherabling. The 14km downhill flight from Billing (2,400m) offers Himalayan views. Visit the Deer Park Institute for Buddhist studies and tea at Glider's Pizzeria.

9. Pong Dam Lake (80 km)

Himachal's largest wetland sanctuary attracts migratory birds (Siberian cranes, bar-headed geese) from November-March. Take a boat ride to islands with Shiva temples. The dam viewpoint offers sunset views, while the nearby Haripur fort adds historical interest.

10. Nadaun (25 km)

This quiet town on the Beas River has the historic Sujanpur Tira Fort built by Raja Abhay Chand, known for its frescoes. The nearby Maharana Pratap Sagar is great for birdwatching. Visit the 300-year-old Shiv Temple at Dera Gopipur en route.
