Himachal Pradesh boasts a diverse cultural heritage with about 90% Hindu population. The main communities include Brahmins, Rajputs, Kannets, Rathis and Kolis. The state's tribal population comprises fascinating groups like the Gaddis (traditional shepherds), Kinnars (from Kinnaur region), Gujjars (buffalo-herding nomads), Pangawals (from Pangi region), and Buddhist Lahaulis from Lahaul and Spiti. Each community maintains unique traditions that contribute to Himachal's rich cultural tapestry.
The state recently updated its official symbols during the 3rd State Wildlife Board Meeting chaired by Shri Virbhadra Singh. Previously, the state symbols were Monal (bird), Musk deer (animal), and Rhododendrum arboretum (flower). The new symbols better represent Himachal's unique biodiversity:
State Animal of Himachal Pradesh:
The majestic Snow Leopard (Panthera uncia) now represents Himachal Pradesh as its state animal, replacing the Musk deer. This endangered big cat inhabits the state's high-altitude snowy regions. With dwindling numbers, the snow leopard's designation highlights conservation efforts for this elusive Himalayan predator.
State Bird of Himachal Pradesh:
The Western Tragopan (Tragopan melanocephalus), locally called Jujurana ('King of Birds'), has replaced the Monal as state bird. This change was made because Monal already serves as Uttarakhand's state bird and Nepal's national bird. The vibrantly colored Western Tragopan, an endangered species native to Himachal's forests, was chosen for its striking beauty and ecological significance.
State Flower of Himachal Pradesh:
The Pink Rhododendron (Rhododendron campanulatum) now represents the state, replacing Rhododendrum arboretum. Classified as endangered by IUCN, this beautiful flowering plant with delicate pink blossoms grows abundantly in Himachal's mountainous terrain. The change reflects the need to protect this vulnerable species that adorns the state's landscapes.
